WayLogger III

is a device that enables long-term detailed monitoring of the state and the method of use of vehicles and mobile machinery. During the entire time that a vehicle is being operated ("from key on to key off"), WayLogger records, in set intervals (minimum 1 s), all information sent by the controlling unit on CAN-bus (SAE J1939). The records containing complex information about the vehicle and driver are stored on a memory card.

WayLogBase is software which evaluates the records. In each record is an evaluated characteristic containing more than 60 values of measured quantities, state information and diagnostic codes. The results, presented as a table and as a graph, are used by vehicle operators, and in product testing and service:

  • Monitoring fuel consumption, tank state and optimum vehicle operation.
  • GPS antenna is included with WayLogger III and allows the route to be displayed on a web maps. [new]
  • Long-term monitoring of vehicle state and diagnostic reports, detection of rare or accidentally occurring states.
  • Evaluating driving styles of individual drivers.
  • Objective comparison of operating characteristics of various vehicles.
  • WLG3 is connected to powertrain CAN-bus (as per SAE J1939) and to the digital tachograph serial port (pin D8). 
  • Data is recorded in set intervals (min.1s) and there are recorded all CAN-bus messages and info from a digital tachograph (driver ID card, VIN).
  • Memory card capacity is sufficient for a few month of recording.
  • Records are processed and evaluated using the WayLogBase 8.x program.
  • Applications from other companies can read data from the WayLogger using wlcExporter program.

WayLogBase 8.x Evaluating software for a work with WayLogger´s data

is comfortable and user-friendly software for processing wl2-files created by the WayLogger Card recorder. From periodic records of current values stored in wl2-files, it evaluates so called characteristics = set of quantities giving complex information about the vehicle, state and method of use in a form of tables and graphs.

These quantities are:

  • VIN, ID driver card GPS tracks review
  • Date / time of the start and end of a record / travel
  • Duration of a record, engine run, standing with the engine running, total travel time and also time in definite modes (with constant accelerator position, in “cruise-control” mode), braking, retarder active (resolution: 1 s) 
  • Trip distance (resolution: 5 m), count of vehicle take-offs, histogram of distance stages
  • Fuel consumption: total (resolution: 0.5 l), average in l/100 km and in l/hour, current consumption histogram, minimum and maximum fuel temperature range Monitored values setting
  • Fuel state in tank at the beginning and end of the record, in case of unexpected difference between levels of sequent records, the red question mark is added
  • Travel method is characterized by: average and maximum value of vehicle speed and engine speed histogram in range 0 – 100 km/h with special histogram for detailed speed evaluation in range 80-100 km/hour; engine torque and engine torque mode histogram, accelerator position histogram, shift level position histogram Vehicle list detail
  • minimum-maximum’ intervals and average values with information about vehicle state: coolant and engine oil temperatures, engine oil pressure, gear-box and retarder oil temperatures, voltage in vehicle electrics...
  • diagnostic trouble codes of all devices communicating on CAN-bus (DM1 DTCs), containing information about trouble source (SPN code), cause (FMI code) and count of occurrences.

Characteristics can be evaluated independently or arbitrarily joined, can be filed and processed in driver / vehicle database, filtered and compared, converted to html-format browser or to MS Excel.

Only by clicking it is possible to generate and print the “Consumption” review from arbitrary number of characteristics, which summarize on A4 format a lot of information for evaluation of a driver’s style to minimize vehicle consumption and operation expenses.

In order to accurately watch for potential losses of fuel while the vehicle is standing, it’s not enough to simply compare the level in the tank between successive records. Several factors must be taken into account in this, such as the tilt of the vehicle (through air escaping from the suspension system, or kneeling), fuel sloshing around in the tank (through hard braking/rapid takeoff), or changes in the physical volume (when fuel heated by the engine cools). Therefore the fuel level in the tank must be carefully monitored throughout the recording. This analysis is made easier through the use of graphs showing fuel levels over 5 successive records, emphasized with a calculated straight-line mean and a statement of accompanying data. Practical experience of some users has shown that this tool can account for the apparent “loss” of 10 litres of fuel.

Of course, it is possible to list time process of all quantities, from which the characteristics is counted. The data are generated (can be filtered) to the table in html format. It enables reviewing and printing, also next exports to arbitrary program according to the user’s wishes.

Note: Histogram (of relative frequencies) expresses “the percentage frequency of occurrences of a given quantity in a given range”. As an example of a histogram: Let’s divide the real speed range of a vehicle into 10 segments, which we’ll write down on a sheet of paper as follows: Less than 10 km/h, 10-19.9 km/h, 20-29.9, 30-39.9, 40-49.9, 50-59.9, 60-69.9, 70-79.9, 80-89.9, and 90 and higher. After the vehicle takes off, every 10 seconds we’ll take the data from the speedometerReport C and make a checkmark in the speed segment in which we are travelling at that moment. When the vehicle stops, we’ll count the total number of checkmarks. Then we’ll divide the number of checkmarks in each segment by the total number, and multiply by 100 to get a result as a percentage. In this way we get ten numbers which show what percent of the whole trip (which we have also measured in time intervals) the vehicle travelled in specific segments – a histogram of momentary speeds. Of course, to be clearer, we would show our result as a chart or bar graph, rather than simply as a series of numbers.



At the request of transport operators who use software for monitoring vehicles online or for generating a travel log-book, we have developed wlcExport, which is a program that allows data from WayLogger to be incorporated into other applications.
