KIBES for buses

The following is typical for bus electrics:

  • Switch-board divided into 2 vehicle spaces, usually the front and rear.
  • Variability of harnesses due to differences in connecting alternatively offered aggregates (engines, gearboxes, retarders, etc.), special bodies and optional equipment (air-conditioning, auxiliary heating….)
  • Large quantity of inputs at the driver’s work place

Significant difference between the equipment of 

  • City buses:
    - self-control of 3 – 5 doors 
    - standardised driver’s work place height-adjustable together with the steering wheel according to VDA recommendation 
    - articulated version

  • Intercity buses/coaches:
    - simple door control
    - driver’s work place in the style of passenger cars/trucks

 KIBES modules used in a typical bus control system:

  • Main vehicle control unit ZR32-A
    serves as a central controller (VECU), which processes information from all sources connected to the control system; It is located in the space with the switch-board.
    The ZR32 has a few inputs and outputs, but 6 CAN-bus interfaces.

    The ZR32 is user-programmable in the KIBES-32development environment. The program provides:
    - communication with the MUX2-B I/O units connected to the „multiplex CAN“ M1CAN/ M2CAN.
    - control of the ModulCombi instrument cluster/ the DWP  integrated driver’s work place
    and the DMUX display units via „instrument CAN“ (ICAN)
    - communication with other vehicle units connected to the “powertrain CAN“ (PCAN); 
    - communication with other vehicle units connected to the “bodywork CAN“ (KCAN); 
    - forwarding messages for devices on different CAN-buses – the „gateway“ function 

  • Input/output units MUX2-B                         
    The main ZR32 unit contains a few inputs and outputs so it is necessary to complete the control system with input/output units.
    These units can be located in protected spaces in a bus (usually under the roof near side walls), where there is no problem with dust or splashing water, so the cheaper MUX2-B units can be used.
    There are usually 4 units in a modern intercity bus /coach, 6 units in a city bus with self-service doors, or 7 units in articulated versions.
    Digital and analogue inputs are parameterised and diagnosable. Outputs have current capacity graduated in a wide-range, permanently resistant against short-circuits and overheating.
    Units are not programmable, and are fully interchangeable with each other.   

  • Display and input/output unit DMUX32-C/M 
    The unit exists in “colour” or “monochrome” version and contains digital inputs and outputs.
    64 digital inputs (parameterised, diagnosable) usually serve to connect controllers at the driver’s work place, 24 outputs usually switch on control lights.
    The colour version enables connection of 3 video cameras with PAL/NTSC analogue outputs.

  • Instrument cluster ModulCombi with display unit DMUX                   inter-city buses/coaches
    serves to transmit information to the driver.
    It is usually located in front of the steering wheel.
    ModulCombi contains all the elements common in modern vehicles:
    - 2 large gauges: tachometer and speedometer
    - 2 smaller gauges: fuel, coolant temperature 
    - 10 standardised control lights 
    - Display input/output unit DMUX32-M/C 
    - „Trip“ button for reset and button to regulate the display brightness

  • Driver’s Work Place with display unit DMUX                                              city buses
    is a module developed in regard to maximum work comfort for different drivers. The ergonomically designed module together with the change of height and steering wheel position changes the whole instrument panel.
    Next to the DMUX display unit it also contains:
    - speedometer
    - 10 control light module (including wire connection)
    - round combined light switch (including wire connection)
    - 2 standard steering column switches: 
                              directional lights + high beam light switch + wiper control + horn 
                              cruise-control switches, retarder control 
    - 24 rectangular positions for locating buttons/switches (including wire connection) 
    - 4 round positions usually used for door buttons (including wire connection)
    - position with a connector for connecting controller of automatic gearbox (including wire connection)
    - switch-box (including wire connection)
    - steering column allowing movement of the whole module in 2 axes
    - air vents (including connection to the supply duct)

 Of course, a minimised version of a bus control system can be created:

         converters CANI_V6R1, CANO_D7, CAN_TPL2, …..

         relays…
